John Buckmaster and Mary Jennings were married in Banner, Wyoming on December 25, 1885. They homesteaded in Wyoming and eventually settled on a ranch on Otter Creek. John's daughter, Clare, recounts an interesting story: "During the trial for the men in the Ten Sleep Sheep raid or the Spring Creek Raid as we called it, the United States Marshall, Joe LaFore, deputized my father to go to Big Trails and get a letter out of Bill Garrison's trunk one evening and he was supposed to be back in Basin before daylight. So my father, John Buckmaster, rode from Basin to Big Trails horseback changing horses three times - that is, he rode just three horses, changing horses as he went by and was in Basin before daylight."
